Why incllude a languages section in your CV

If you are proficient in more than two languages, it can be beneficial to include a languages section on your resume. Note however that there are other ways of showing your language skills to the recruiter (see below).

How to write the languages section of your CV

If you want to list your language proficiencies in a language section, then you should go for the following format and proficiency scale (from native to elementary):

English: Native

Spanish: Full professional proficiency

German: Professional working proficiency

Japanese: Limited working proficiency

Norwegian: Elementary proficiency

Further, if you have any language experiences, such as studying abroad or working with international clients, then try to incorporate those naturally in the descriptions of your work-experience and education sections. This will show the recruiter that you have actual experience with the language.

Note however that a languages section becomes quite sparse for most professionals. Only two languages does not look that impressive on the resume. Instead, for most people it is instead beneficial to include any additional language skills within the skills section, for example as "Fluent in English and Spanish". This helps with keeping the resume format clean and professional.
