Example: Williams's interpreter CV

William's resume is very well written and he manages to convey his competence in a very concise manner. The resume looks a bit light on text however, which might be interpreted as him being quite junior. Lets go through his CV together!

Interpreter CV — summary section

I really love William's summary. He has truly succeded in telling his story and showcase his competencies in only two sentences.

But as we touched on above in the introduction, his resume looks a bit light-weight. As such I would like the summary to be more extensive, for example:

I am a passionate and highly skilled interpreter with over 5 years of experience. I take great pride in my ability to translate for clients in various industries, including healthcare, legal, and education.
My fluency in both English and Spanish, coupled with my exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, enables me to connect with individuals from all walks of life.
As an interpreter, I am committed to delivering accurate and reliable translations that facilitate clear communication and understanding between parties.

Interpreter CV — skills section

The skills section of William's resume is good, but it is not necessary to place it just after the summary section. Many of the skills are already mentioned in the summary, so it becomes a bit repetitive (read more about the skills section here).

If William instead places the skills section at the bottom of the page he will gain two things: (i) The experience section will get more attention from the recruiter and (ii) the flow of the resume will improve a lot.

Interpreter CV — experience section

William seems to have really good experiences that will help him land his dream job. Note however that his job descriptions are quite repetive. As such William could re-write the second description as follows:

Responsibilities included delivering top-notch interpretation services to clients across diverse industries. Collaborated closely with clients to ensure that communication was culturally appropriate and precise. Additionally, I adeptly translated critical documents and materials as per the specific needs of clients.

Remember that we need to add text to William's resume in order to make it look more professional, but lets not make it too dense either. The amount of descriptive text in the experience section is on target.

Interpreter CV — education section

The education section of William's resume is currently without any descriptions. Normally that is totally fine (at least if you have good and relevant work experiences), but for William's resume we want to add text content.

As an example, William could add some successes and learnings to his educations:

Graduated with honors and completed an intensive study abroad program in Spain to gain practical experience and fluency in Spanish.

Achieved the highest level of certification.

Interpreter CV — references section

William has added a references section to his CV with the standard text "References available on request.", which is completely OK (read more about the references section here). Note however that he most likely added this section only to make the resume look more extensive (go back up and check out the CV again, how sparse would it look without the reference section?)

Such tricks can actually be good to have up your sleeve when creating you resume. There are many variants of sections that you can add to your resume in order to make it look more extensive.

Interpreter CV — languages section

Some people like to have a languages section in their resume, but this is seldom necessary. Look instead at how William has incorporated his language skills in his resume. Also, a languages section quite often look a bit sparse, or even out of place. In particular if you only speak two languages. Read more about the languages section here.
