Example: Steve's HR manager CV

Steve has a strong track record and his resume is quite good. When I read this example CV I get the impression that Steve is highly competent, but maybe also a bit rigid. Let us have a look at some ideas for improvement!

HR manager CV — basic-information section

The first section of the resume we almost never even mention. It is always there, but mostly not that important. This basic-information section, or contacts section, is mostly there only for administrative purposes, ie to help the recruiter get in contact with you.

But for Steve we make an exception. Why? Well, Steve is an HR manager and allegedly skilled at talent acquisition, but he has not provided his LinkedIn!

Questions might pop up in the recruiters mind: Does Steve not use LinkedIn? Maybe he just forgot to add it? Or maybe he is not as strong in talent acquisition as he claims.

The solution is of course easy: lets just add the link to Steve's LinkedIn in the contacts section.

HR manager CV — summary section

Steve's summary is quite rigid, but I like it a lot anyway. Just by reading those three sentences I get the feeling that Steve is very competent, do you agree?

The thing is that some of us are a bit rigid as persons and that is OK! Do not try to be something you are not in your resume.

HR manager CV — skills section

The skills section in Steve's resume looks good, I have nothing to add.

I do however prefer to have the work-experience section above the skills section. In my opinion experience beats skills every day.

HR manager CV — experience section

What I like the most with the work experiences of Steve is the measurable successes he provides, eg "30% reduction in time-to-fill positions". This tells me that Steve is results-oriented and has a track record of creating success. Note however that this is the type of topic that an interviewer might follow-up on at the job interview, so make sure to prepare!

When it comes to the descriptions of the job experiences I think they are too long. The problem is not the content, but rather getting the recruiter to actually read about all of Steve's successes. Something like this would be better:

Implemented HR strategies aligned with business goals. Reduced recruitment time by 30% and increased new hire retention by 15%. Improved employee benefits program and cut costs by 10%. Led training programs to enhance performance. Ensured compliance with employment laws.

HR manager CV — education section

Since Steve has good work experience the education section is of less importance, so it is good that he has placed the section far down. Also, there is no need to have long descriptions for the educations. Read more about the education section here.

However, note that the resume becomes rather uneven since Steve as chosen to not have descriptions for the education section while he simultaneously has very long descriptions for the work experiences (see above). A solution would be to add short one-sentence descriptions for the educations or shorten the experience descriptions.
